The anatomy of selling online
I remember as a developer, despite having excellent knowledge of Visual Basic 6, I knew zilch about the steps required to get a software online. As I struggled through countless websites and countless hours, I came to realise that the the skill sets required to start selling a software online are very much different than those required for making even fantastic software. To save time, I will give you, in bullet points, some of the areas we will be exploring is appropriate detail.
- Develop the software - This is NOT the focus of this website! We will only be looking at some extra features that you may need to add to the software to take payments, link to help files, product activation, etc.
- Prepare a demo software - This involves working out exactly how you want your users to buy your product and also work out what limitation(s) your demo software has.
- Accepting payments - i.e. how does someone pay for your software? is it through the web or through your software?
- Licensing - Basically a document that contains the details on exactly how your product can be used
- Making Help files
- Creating an instillation file - i.e. pull everything above into a single instillation file, ready for distribution!
- Creating a Website
- Debug fully - this should actually be done at each of the above steps, but do a final debug before…
- Promoting your site/your software - i.e make others know about the existence of your software
- Keeping cost to a minimum whilst doing the above (please note, these can actually all be done for free if you wanted to… however, as with everything, compromises have to be made.)
